Quietly, without much fanfare from the media.
Government decided it was a discrepancy that for most purposes, anyone under 18 should be classed as a child. Most other primary legislation enacted in the past few decades treated under 18s as kids.
So, no smoking, no drinking, no sex, no marriage. Adult life started at 18 as far as the government was concerned.
Until now.
Today, the government announced it would reduce the voting age to 16. So an under 18 doesn't have the capability to consent to sex, marriage, or to make an informed decision to shorten their life with drinks or fags.
But according to the government today, an under 18 can decide which political party to vote for. Because it suits. It suits the government because they think younger people will vote Labour. It's jerrymandering.
Except.....
The Reform party is now the popular political party of under 18s thanks to their social media successes.
Labour's plan to hold onto power may well backfire, spectacularly.
