Nigel Farage is rightly up in arms about Chris Bryant MP saying he should be sanctioned for taking money from the Russia Today TV channel in 2018.
Now let's unpack Bryant's insanity here.
First off, the £500,000 figure for 2018 is Farage's TOTAL earnings, not from RT. Farage says he only appeared on RT for comments and that he didn't ern anything in 2018 for doing that.
Now Farage is being a bit coy by saying that he didn't earn anything in 2018, but the careful qualification means as we all know that Farage must have earned money from RT in other years. Just not 2018.
However, why would we sanction Farage for taking money from RT (and by extension the Russian state) 5 years ago? Was it illegal back then to take money from Russia?
We can't start backdating laws like social media comments from decades ago.
Farage has done nothing illegal. Illegality is the lawful excuse for freezing accounts. I'm pretty sure that in the end, the Russian citizens that have has assets seized and accounts frozen will have a legal claim against banks for unlawful seizure.
And if Bryant says anything outside the protection of Parliament Farage will have a claim too.
And let's be honest, Farage's fees pale into insignificance compared to the Billions Germany continues to pay for Russian gas, that they are allowed to pay to the Russians even while they shell Ukrainian cities, because they got the EU to exempt gas and oil money from sanctions.
Now if that doesn't stink, nothing does. But of course Remainer Chris Bryant won't criticise the EU would he?
