Just my (Very, very, very) bad luck

Okay, We're moving this weekend into a 2 bedroom flat, in an attempt to save money.

Well, that was the plan, until the landlord of the place we're moving into up and died at the beginning of this week, leaving us having to get out of our house this weekend with nowhere to go.

Who'd have our luck eh? I hope no-one has luck as bad as ours, its a really shit place to be having to roll with the body blows life deals you.

So, I'll lose three days pay as I attempt to find some sort of alternative arrangement. With no money to do it with as the deposits are with the now deceased landlord. I have 1 day.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, because at the moment, I'm all out of them.

I hate being me.

  1. Auch Del, I just don't know what to say. What an absolute bummer.

I'm sure you've thought about contacting his family etc. What about the council? No joy as usual I suppose.

Do let me know how you get on. I'll be thinking of you.

  2. The problem is things are hamstrung on the family's side because you have to wait while the late landlord's estate is sorted out by the executors, not all of whom will want to continue to rent the property. Anyhow, that could take weeks - months even, which doesn't help.
We only found out this afternoon: we were supposed to be picking up the keys on Friday, so lots of phoning to do tomorrow to flesh out options.
I'll be contacting the council, but I don't hold out any hope, as they'll take ages to provide anything like accomodation after all the forms are filled in and to be honest I fully expect them to turn round and say we made ourselves homeless, we have to sort things out. Despite having lost a fair chunk of money to the late landlord's estate.
That also mans no deposit money for another place, and no money for credit checks, etc.
Talk about a rock and a hard place....
Where we are is about as rocky and as hard as places ever get....
I'm even comtemplating breaking into Portsmouth ferry port and present myself at the immigration desk with no documents and use the "No speeky eeengleesh" excuse to get instant housing.
This will be a real test of the council as to how they react to a real emergency housing situation. As I say, I'm fully expecting a poor response.

  3. Oh heavens, good luck. I'm sure you'll find somewhere. Fingers crossed.

If you're looking for emergency accommodation, which you aren't, yet, try Shelter 0808 800 4444 or look at 'HomelessUK', Salvation Army etc. They're a bit drastic, but they might have list of landlords who have short term lets. Even the nearest church/vicar might be able to help, doesn't matter what denomination.

Citizen's Advice Bureau too, because surely if the contract has been signed it should be honoured, even if it's only in the short term.

If you can find somewhere to store most of your stuff could you afford a Travelodge? If you book online it's a lot cheaper.

Are you in Portsmouth? (No need to reply to that here, it's a bit indiscreet online)

  4. Ah, there's the problem: we were due to sign the paperwork on Friday..... So no contract other than verbal. Plus everything stops once the estate goes intestate. Until the executors of the estate have fulfilled their obligations and beneficiaries have agreed a plan, nothing happens.

Travelodge is way out of our price bracket. We just had enough money to do the move, but obviously we've spent several hundred on tenency/credit checks, etc.

Moral of the story? Always have a plan B.
